  ANTIQUE & COLLECTABLE FIREARMS

Includes some modern sporting arms & modern muzzleloaders (lots 497-508).

special thanks to Doug Wicklund, Jim Whisker, and Bill Curtis for consultation on some antique arms.  Any errors are mine, not theirs. - Jim Supica

Lot 350 - Napoleonic era air rifle -- description & estimate updated 10-17-06 .36 cal.; 33.75” brass barrel - Good condition. - Very good metal; smooth cleaned brass furniture & barrel, with a dent in the top of the barrel about a foot from the muzzle.  Lock is styled to look like a flintlock, complete w/ pan, frizzen, and cock, and is smooth crisp metal with a rounded face lockplate.  Hollow convex buttplate is released by a button on the top rear of the stock to be removed to allow access to the pump mechanism. - The metal air chamber is enclosed in the wooden buttstock.  Pump seems to work, but does not seem to hold pressure.  Trigger & cock work.  Relief carved stock w/ cheekpiece has a tight, possibly glued, crack at wrist, and a break at the left side of the forend about a foot forward of the lock, and is splitting back from the muzzle.  Wood has very few handling & usage marks.  About a third of the horn nosecap is missing. Finer early air guns, such as this one, were styled to resemble their blackpowder counterparts, which is built to resemble a flintlock.  This is a very nice one and very high quality  - antq - (estimate $3500 to $7000) - [6c-NBAZ1]

Lot 351 - Ornate early flintlock - description & estimate updated 10-17-06   possibly Austrian, possibly late 17th or early 18th Century - Approx. .78 caliber; 36” octagon / round cannon muzzle rifled barrel. - Condition is very good to fine.  All metal is very crisp.  Barrel has deep twist pattern; ornate carving at muzzle & rear half; decorative red stone or coral inlays, several missing the stone. -   Lock & hammer have light crisp good quality engraving with scrolls, and a fanciful beast's head surrounded by stylized scimitar, hunting horn, and quiver representations. Brass furniture is generally ornately decorated.  Triggerguard has engraved stag & hounds engraved on bow, and doe on front tang.  Sideplate has 17 piercings, and hound.  Buttplate tang has dragon in scroll.   - Forend cap is plain brass, with front ramrod thimble simpler design than rear, so possibly this was shortened from full stock to half stock long ago.  Stock is relief carved, with raised cheekpiece, cracked at wrist, a few small wormholes in buttstock.  Working; good bore.  Possibly French origin. Coral & stone inlays were often for the Turkish market.  With this level of embellishment, might have been intended for a special customer.  - antq - (estimate 2500 to 5000) - [6c-NBAZ2]

Lot 352 - Bechtholt a Weilburg marked - early ornate Jaeger style flintlock carbine - with square bore. - description & estimate updated 10-17-06  - .52 cal. (.70 diagonally) rifled 28.5” swamped octagonal barrel. - Fine condition. - Crisp light gray slightly mottled metal, iron furniture.  Lockplate engraved “Bechtholt A*weilburg”, with scroll tailed dragon at rear; grotesque face on head of slotless hammer screw (how'd he do that?). - Working w/ double set trigger, adjustable by a key between the two triggers, w/ a large triggerguard that enclosed the entire shooting hand.  Very good 8 groove rifling in square bore.  There's one groove in each corner of the square, and one groove in each side of the square, with the square & rifling together making about one full twist in the length of the bore (how'd he do THAT?) - Relief carved stock w/ small cheekpiece, and wooden patchbox lid.  Buttstock has some tight age cracking that does not appear to be through & through; forend has been broken & repaired; a few worm holes.  Generally, surface of wood has few dings & losses.   - antq - (estimate 2500 to 5000) - [6c-NBAZ3]

Lot 353 - Muller percussion boar rifle - spring loaded bayonet - description & estimate updated 10-17-06  - .54 caliber 7-groove rifled 27.75” swamped octagon barrel. - Fine condition. - Crisp gray metal w/ small darker spots; bright brass furniture. - Two line small boxed stamped marking on barrel breech, 1st initial unclear, possibly R, K, H or G, “MULLER”; 2nd line “N MEHL”.  “No. 8” stamped large on side plate, w/ 8 also on all major exterior components.  Triangular 15.25” bayonet, with grooves on two sides, snaps briskly & firmly into position when latch is worked.  Bright brass furniture. - Adjustable double set trigger; not working, seems like main spring broken or missing.  Lever on sideplate to prevent hammer from resting on cap.  Sound stock w/ minor usage marks; wooden capbox lid.  Rear sight with one flip-up leaf.  Such boar rifles were intended for hunting dangerous game at close range.  After the one shot was fired, the folding bayonet came into (usually immediate) play.  - antq - (estimate 2000 to 4000) - [6c-NBAZ4]

Lot 354 - Experimental brass frame spur-trigger American shotgun - S&T marked, 1880 dated - 12 ga., 32” barrel. - About excellent condition. - Bright metal barrel w/ some pepper spotting; medium patina brass frame.  Large chip missing from bottom rear of otherwise excellent wood.  Breech block swivels to right to load & unload. - Previous owner referred to this as a “Phoenix Action spur trigger” and believed this may have been a prototype of experimental by Whitney.  He acquired it from Norm Flayderman in 1987 - antq - (estimate:  Who knows?  Let us nod our head wisely, and say “$1,000 to $2,000” in what we hope is an authoritative & convincing manner.. to ) - [6c-12cx]

Lot 355 - Colt - Paterson No. 5 revolver - .36 percussion; 6-5/8” barrel. - Fair condition. - Gray metal w/ moderate to heavy pitting overall.  Intact silver band at muzzle; partial silver bands at breech & barrel lug steps.  Most markings gone; “14” visible on frame underneath folded trigger.  Wedge, several screws, and grips are modern replacements.  Hammer rotates cylinder; otherwise not working.   - s/n possibly 14 - antq - (estimate 10000 to 20000) - [6c-MGKS1]  Commentary added 10/18/06 - Note especially unusual barrel length, early serial number, platinum bands.  Please also check back Oct. 24 for possible additional information on this lot.

Lot 356 - Pair of percussion pistols - markings include “Brossard”, “A. Ruban”, and “Bonnet”. - .53 cal.; 8.5” multi-groove rifled octagon barrels. - One hammer spur broken, otherwise about excellent condition. - Crisp metal; strong deep twist pattern on barrels; sharp engraving on lockplates, hammers & tangs.    Sculpted dogs-head hammer; sculpted shell motif hinged covers on cap boxes in butts.  Circassian walnut stocks have scalloped border checkering and carved flared butts. - The following are stamped on the bottom side of the barrel:  “B. Bonnet”, “A. Ruban”, “Brossard”, “30”, and a small proof type mark.  I'm out of my depth here, but knowledgeable consignor believes that these indicate Bonnet as the French gunsmith working in Russia.  He reports the small stamp as a Romanoff era proof w/ Tula “T”.  In a french-fitted case that has been with the guns for a long time, but is of more recent construction. - antq - (estimate 1500 to 3000) - [6c-MGKS5]

Lot 358 - National Arms - No. 2 Derringer - .41 rimfire - Fine condition. - 70% bright original plating on frame, w/ strong original engraving; barrel retains about 40% bright blue, more on left side than right, well blended w/ plum patina.  Working; good bore; fine to exc. grips retain most finish. - s/n 8114 - antq - (estimate 750 to 1500) - [6c-WRAZ3]

Lot 392 - Colt - Single Action Army - Frontier Six Shooter - .44-40; 4.75 barrel - 10-20% blue (strongest on cylinder) certainly appears to be factory type, and good remainders of case color on frame.  However, frame gauge says frame has been slimmed, presumably by removal of metal in a refinish polish.  If it is a refinish, it was factory quality & done a long time ago; markings & edges are strong & well maintained.  Good mech; light roughness in strong bore; very good grips. - ca. 1902. - s/n 231601 - C&R ffl - (estimate 1850 to 2500) - [ca-1501bb]
