Lot #97 - Lot #97 is a British flintlock musket attributed to American Revolutionary War Gen. John Sullivan. – This Brown Bess was passed down in the Sullivan family, given to their pastor, and passed down in his family through the current owner. - This is the first time it has been offered on the open market. - It is accompanied by a notarized statement from the current owner, a physician in Kentucky, which states that this musket, along with lot #98, were among several gifts given to his great-grandfather, Rev. Benjamin F. McDaniel of Exeter NM late in the 19th Century by the Misses Sullivan, 'spinster' heirs of the General's estate  who attended his Unitarian Church.  His interest in American antiques was apparently well-known, as perhaps was his service to the Union in the Civil War. - The musket was presented as having been captured from the British army by Gen. Sullivan's troops in the Battle of Saratoga.  It was the personal property of Gen. Sullivan passing through his family to the Misses Sullivan, who gave it to his Great-grandfather.
The statement goes on to discuss the successive generations of owners, all prominent individuals in their own right:
*
Rev. McDaniel, original recipient from the Sullivan sisters, served in the Civil War beginning as a drummer boy at age 14, attended Harvard Divinity School, and became a Unitarian Minister in New Hampshire.
* His son, Allen Boyer McDaniel, 1880-1968, graduated MIT and became a distinguished Civil Engineer, founding the Dept. of Engineering at Univ. of S.D., among other accomplishments enumerated, including President of the Cosmo Club in Washington, D.C. -
* His son, Alden West McDaniel (1913-1998), father of the current owner, attended Annapolis & graduated in engineering from Cornell, after which he was the project engineer for the Martin Mariner during WWII, eventually retiring from the Bureau of Standards.
* His son, the current owner, is a surgeon currently on the faculty at the U. of Louisville

The statement goes so far as to note the addresses where the musket has “resided” over the decades.
It also mentions Gen. Sullivan's banquet table, which had accompanied the musket until it was donated to New Hampshire Historical Society.  There, the Director of Collections & Exhibitions accepted the donation after investigating the provenance. - It is very unusual for documented Revolutionary War firearms to be offered, and even more rare for them to have such a complete and prestigious chain of ownership. -
.75 cal. - 42” barrel; 58” overall.   - Good condition. - English Short Land Pattern 1768 Musket.  Dark brown metal w/ light roughness deepening to light pitting on cock & barrel breech.  Lockplate marked large crown over GR & TOWER.  Small markings on barrel breech obscured by pitting.  Patina brass furniture w/ hazel nut triggerguard.  Measurements include Lock 7”.  Triggerguard 11.25”.  Sideplate 6.25”.  Butt tang 3.5”.  Sound stock showing age, storage & usage marks.  Sling swivels are missing. - antq - [9McD 97] - (est.5000-15000).
Lot #98 - Third Model Brown Bess flintlock musket. - .75 cal. -39.25” barrel; 54.5” overall.  - About very good condition. - Light gray barrel metal under light brown patina w/ light roughness. - Lock marked large crown over GR & TOWER.  Brass furniture is simpler than on 2nd Model.  Barrel marks include two crossed scepter under crown proofs, one V & one BPC.  O neck cock.  Sound wood shows usage, storage & age.   As with the previous lot, this musket was passed down from the Sullivan family through the McDaniel family with a tradition of having been given to Gen. Sullivan from the battle of Saratoga.  However, the pattern of this musket makes it extremely unlikely that it was manufactured by the time of the American Revolution.  A likely explanation would be that the Sullivan family acquired this musket between the Rev.War and Civil War, and the family history of the pieces became inadvertently intertwined at some time during that interval.  A nice and honest Brown Bess on its own, with an interesting story associated. - antq - [9McD 98] - (est.2500-5000).
